Chicago White Sox Slugger Eloy Jiménez Heads to Paternity List
USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox have placed outfielder and designated hitter Eloy Jiménez on the paternity list, the team announced Friday afternoon.

In a corresponding move, the White Sox have recalled infielder Lenyn Sosa from Triple-A Charlotte.

By going on the paternity list, Jiménez must miss Chicago's matchup with the Colorado Rockies on Friday, but he cannot miss more than three games. Jiménez will return to the active roster no later than Monday, which marks the start of both the White Sox's seven-game homestand and their three-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

Entering this weekend, Jiménez was hitting .277 with 14 home runs, 50 RBI, a .771 OPS and a 0.5 WAR on the season. In August alone, however, Jiménez was batting .227 with a .551 OPS.

Jiménez was struggling with injuries prior to this latest designation, missing Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs due to lingering groin discomfort that had already knocked him out of the lineup in July. A heel injury cost him two starts earlier in August, and left calf discomfort cost him multiple games in June.

Appearing in an average of 80 games a season, Jiménez is batting .276 with 85 home runs, 261 RBI, an .818 OPS and a 5.8 WAR since joining the White Sox in 2019.

Gavin Sheets is starting at designated hitter for the White Sox in Jiménez's absence on Friday, while Andrew Vaughn is getting the start at first. Rookie right fielder Óscar Colás is getting the day off, opening the door for trade deadline acquisition Trayce Thompson to start in the outfield.

First pitch between the Rockies and the Jiménez-less White Sox is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. ET.
