Spurs aren't hot on potential Trae Young and Victor Wembanyama pairing

The San Antonio Spurs have been rumored to be a potential trade partner for the Atlanta Hawks' Trae Young.

The rebuilding Western Conference franchise is one of the few places that make legitimate sense for the All-Star guard. A potential pairing with Victor Wembanyama would help cover up Young's defensive limitations.

However, according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, the Spurs don't view Young as the ideal replacement for their standout big man.

"One other note. Spurs fans have been buzzing about the team getting in the mix for a Trae Young trade this summer, as he is the most acclaimed point guard likely to be available," Helin reported. "League sources have told NBC Sports not to bet on that happening, as San Antonio doesn’t see Young as a fit with Wembanyama going forward. The Spurs might be more interested in the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray if he is available."

Young's future with the Hawks will be a hot topic this summer. The middling Eastern Conference franchise is reportedly accepting of the fact that it will need to either move on from Young or Dejounte Murray.

San Antonio has the young talent and draft assets to produce a compelling trade offer for the Hawks' star player. Nevertheless, the option appears unclear to become a legitimate path forward. As such, Young's future now looks more uncertain than ever.

According to Marc Stein, who wrote in a recent edition of his SteinLine newsletter, the Hawks are expected to move on from Young rather than Murray this summer.

"There is a growing belief in many corners of the league that Atlanta's preference would actually be shopping Young," Stein reported.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been rumored to hold interest in acquiring Young. However, beyond the Purple and Gold, it's difficult to see where a logical trade partner is going to come from. Atlanta could still change course. It could opt to move on from Murray. Or it could decide to keep the guard pairing for another season.

Whatever the Hawks front office decides to do, they will need to move swiftly. They can't afford to enter next season with a disillusioned Young on their roster. It's going to be an interesting summer for the franchise.
