It’s being reported that both Manchester United and Manchester City are set to battle it out for the signing of one-time Celtic star, Jeremie Frimpong. The Bayer Leverkusen ace has long been touted as the next big-money full-back in European football after fulfilling his true potential following a move to Germany from the Scottish side a few years ago.

Frimpong was a real find for Celtic back in the summer transfer window of 2019, when Neil Lennon brought him to the club from none other than Man City’s own youth academy. The player was only young at the time but it was obvious he possessed bags of potential and quality and it wasn’t long before the Irishman had him in and around the first team to then eventually starting on a weekly basis for the Hoops.

Growing from strength to strength in a Celtic jersey, the Netherlands right-back helped the Bhoys to silverware but could not help the demise that unfolded in the season of 2020/21, when no fans were allowed in to see their team play football. When it was clear that the Bhoys had no chance of realistically winning the title, the manager and heirarchy granted Jeremie to seize the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga with one of Germany’s bigger clubs in Bayer Leverkusen, and he subsequently made an £11.5 million move in the January of 2021.

He’s really kicked on over there and now he’s got quite a few suitors ahead of this summer transfer window, were it’s being widely reported that he has a £35 million release clause in his contract. Scottish Sun are now claiming that Manchester United and his former side City are set to do battle for his signature, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe looking to rebuild and reinforce the flailing club after buying a 25% stake in the outfit which was ratified earlier on this year. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola and the powerbrokers across the city see Frimpong as a long-term successor to Enlgand’s Kyle Walker.
